OK I have been neglecting to post promised photos once again....
...but i have a valid excuse now!
sorry guys I have been flat out working on an exhibit, an installation which will feature some of my fashion designs mainly menswear, as well as some photographs and relics i have put together.

I have mentioned, once or twice in previous posts, my disinterest in the gender stereotyping of clothes. Obviously, there are certain aspects in clothing that are restricted to one gender purely for technical and functional reasons. When it comes to aesthetics however, I think it's time we broke the crotches and girdles of what is "normal" and return to our freedom of wearing what is beautiful and comfortable regardless of anything!

It's not about gender, culture, sexuality, age, ethnicity, what we grew up believing and what is deemed to be "appropriate".....it's about freedom! freedom of men wearing skirts because it emphasizes their calves, because it makes them feel comfortable, because it looks nice with their shirt.....freedom of a young Victorian-era lady wearing a pair of loose fisherman's pants because it makes her breathe. It's about a gay boy putting a flower on his buttonhole just because it accentuates the buttons of his coat---not because he's gay.

some people may be aware of the fact that the city of sydney is currently harbouring fashion's most elusive supermodels of the moment. yes, i am talking about the catherine mcneil-freja beha erichsen tandem.

since i haven't personally heard from either of them the nature of their partnership, i won't assume anything. however, sightings for the past few months from various onlookers have shown that the pair have been seen mix-matching each other's wardrobe, mainly a number of t-shirts plus match-accessorising silver rings and tag-team-tattooing, so i suppose that automatically translates onto the gossip blogs as a love affair.

now personally, i couldn't give a shit if they listened to fiona apple/joni mitchell mixtapes while personalising each other's cherry DMs with lovehearts while shaving each other's head. their business is their own and unknown.

all i want is to be able to photograph them in the street while wearing these said t-shirts, because i've seen phototgraphs of them (on the internet, by other poeple) and the collection is very vintage-grunge-worthy cool.

so if anyone has seen them hanging out at a particular place in Sydney, please let me know, as i need to hunt them down.

yeah, i was swimming through my archives and found these photos from last season's SS RAFW (um, april-may 2008 sydney fashion week, for those wondering). so haha yes, they ARE ancient as far as the fashion world goes. for me however, these people are classically very well groomed and frocked. so time doesn't matter. and these photographs immortalise that fact.

whenever i look at pictures of people such as these, i always wonder if maybe someday, one fine day, i could also, perhaps, look as pristinely polished as they are.

i don't think it's ever gonna come. even if i wear freshly laundered/dry cleaned/steamed/pressed clothes of the finest silks and wools, there will always be some form of blemish to ruin the attempt. i just know there will be something like a piece of frayed thread which i neglect to trim, or a klutzy ketchup stain from last night's sausage roll, or my unruly hair falling and resting offensively in the middle of the bare white lapel.

maybe it's a curse. a futile pursuit. no matter how much scrubbing, polishing and brushing i do, these creatures will always look about 5 showers and $3,000 ahead of me.

well, here's and old photo of this "cool" photographer chick (in green vest) who shot for Vogue Brasil at RAFW SS08. her get-up alone looks awesome, especially that mystery mini-trunk, but the camera adds firepower. she initially hesitated to include the gargantuan zoom lens in the photo for fear of being labelled with a "big dick" syndrome, but i said big was "cool".

the next is an even older photo of snapper jessie french. to those who know me, i've stated enough how high i put her in my "cool" list, so i won't reiterate. here, she is seen without her canon.
but she still looks "cool".

so, that's something to ponder.

somehow these guys' looks have the same feel to them. however, elements of their ensembles show us their individual style.

let's break-e-brek-e-brek-it down:

notice the wide cutaway collars on both these dudes' crisp white shirts. they spell elegance. matched up with simple, statement accessories (black rosary necklace; bolo tie) and you've got style impact. they both have well cut, well fitting coats--one loose and black, the other slim-fit and in a bold blue. down to the pants, even these are made with the details of good, modern and interesting fabrics AND one more thing that these guys have done right is picked the right cut of pants to wear with the good choice of footwear. men's shoes (or menswear in general) is definitely more interesting than women's, because when boys get them right, the effect is much more noticeable.

older people always get to me. there's something about the way they wear their clothes that thrills me. i think it's the care and patience they put into folding their starched collars, or neatly pressing out those perfect pleats on their shirts. (yes, thrilling, no?) but those are things not commonly seen nowadays on just anyone. when i do spot them wrinkly golden wonders though, i get deeply terrified in asking for a photo.

so i decided to post some old photos of boots. these two adorable specimens showed their boots off for me upon my immediate admiration. without prior planning, they coincidentally had similar looking pairs. without prior planning, they're both coincidentally very gentle, adorable creatures who happen to wear an amazing pair of rugged, quality boots so full of life and wild adventures. i had a pair like these when i was about 11. they were in a beautiful caramel leather with a rustic finish buckle. . .sadly i failed to appreciate their soulful beauty and lost them somewhere in the back of my closet. eternal darkness was all the adventure they ever got.

View of Courage's Robyn Wilson in bold black, red and white. this is one of the ways on how to effectively wear it. keep it simple. her accessories included a square of fine black silk fabric draped as a scarf and a beautiful hat that said "go on, stare at me, i dare you to". the look is very strong, but simple.

try that, and see how you go.

oh and make sure you find a red chair and a background that aptly spells the words "red" and "white".

it's really tricky to dress one's self in an almost totally white outfit. first, you have to get your pieces right. whether they're basic or wacky pieces, make sure that the final ensemble is perfectly balanced. in this lady's case, she paired an oversized jacket with plain white tights. this builds a layered base for her to work with when adding other items to her outfit. the varied prints on the bold black and white pieces she has on makes the look more 3D. to top it off, the pinch of red breathes life into it.
all she had to do was posses the attitude and confidence and a good supply of beer. et voila!

but with all this said, you might wanna think twice if you're planning on walking out of the house in your pilsbury dough boy costume from last halloween. otherwise you'd be just as convincing as that miranda kerr cover on fashion week's "daily".

A Tonal A Ttitude

you know how this new age skinny swedish look usually generates a hard, arrogant, too-cool-for-school attitude amongst its male minions? well i just found one that finally rests on a softer light. i dunno maybe it's just this boy's general look, like his ever so tender features, the pale grey jacket or how his hair casually waves and sweeps back that makes him less difficult to approach. this boy's look gave me the comfort that if i ask for his photograph he wouldn't give me a lame slur about how his ridiculously good looks is so in the way of him spending normal time in his quiet studio apartment doing normal things like, i dunno, doing...normal people stuff cos it's just much more fulfilling than being ridiculously good looking.

this dude made good dress choices, in any case. it's refreshing to see a guy opt for a grey jacket instead of the usual black when it does better in bringing out the tones and hues of the rest of his outfit.

RAFW SS Day 1 Wayne Cooper

i felt like i was in heaven and hell at the same time. the backdrop for the wayne cooper show was a breathtaking video of clouds, skies, clouds, clouds and clouds. the colours of these nimbus beauties ranged from featherly light whites to raging scarlet reds and gave the audience that "ooooh-aaaaaaah" appeal. clouds were flipped, mirrored and expanded while they tumbled and whirled on the screens, mesmerising everyone. this collection of fluffy wonders was a heaven sent gift from the amazing creative team View of Courage.
personally that video was the only thing that made watching this show less of an ordeal. the clothes wear a bit bleak. the kind of stuff that you already know will come out of that white wall.
it was only cool cos the models filed out of what looked like a portal to the 4th dimension (see image above). i'd love to enter it. . .

RAFW SS Day 1 Trimapee

okay. the clothes and styling and general show presentation must be one of my favourites so far.

the set was dark, gritty and simple.
with a puddle of water in the middle of the room for the models to splash their shiny DMs on, an ambience of street cred was instantly achieved. not to mention the "Trimapee" spray painted car sitting quietly near the entrance of the venue.

the clothes were oil-slickened darkhorse aristogoth doomsayer (yes, that's exactly what i meant). varied textures and intensities of black were layered, creating that "fuck i'm hardcore!" look that every self-respecting teenage rebel wants to achieve. hoods, nets and scarves were ever so present along with random heavy duty trinket jewellery. hair was long, lanky and dirty in a neat deliberate manner and make-up was kept to a minimum pale skin, growling blackened eyes and black tainted nude lips.
the attitude carried by the well chosen models stung us as they stomped around in their heavy boots.

commanded by the precise styling directon of claire "ms fitz" fitzsimmons, the trimapee show was probably one of the only shows that seriously kicked-ass.

nice, well tailored, hard hued, sharp, straighforward, bam! bam! bam! clothes.
some klutz spilled their drink at the foot of the catwalk just before the show.
i wonder if the boys would've survived it had they slipped.
at least they'll look good during the fall.

Boom, Blue and Fur

so i met this nice chick filming backstage at michelle jank, and as if she didn't already look cute enough in all these layers of wonderfully textured fabrics plus a little beret, she was carrying aroung these film making accessories which made her look kick ass!
to her, they're functional film making tools. to me, pure aesthetics. the furry mic thing puts a textured autumn look together and to be the cherry on top, the bright blue (see That Whole Meryl Streep Cerulean Speech, posted december 2007) cord gives it that powerful splash of colour.

i'm thinking of taking it to the next level. tomorrow, i shall venture out to buy 10 metres of bright blue cord wire and one of those furry mic things then deliberately carry them around town as the most fashion forward autumn/winter accessories anyone has ever seen.

RAFW SS Day 1 Michelle Jank

backstage, th girls were being faux tattooed all these cool birds, although what i really found impressive was the sleeve on the make up chick's whole arm. only a select few could successfully pull them off, this here lady is a make-up artist--she knows it looks good on her.

so back to michelle jank styling, i think the crew worked to make the models look like goddess statues. hair was painted a matte plaster-white, their eyebrows coated with leaves of silver and of course, when teamed with the draped luxurious gowns, why would i assume otherwise?

they sort of reminded me of statues on a beautiful garden fountain with birds perched on their shoulders. well, there was a whole water feature going on at the show where the backdrop was a slow motion video of water falling and the catwalk looked glossy and liquid. at the end, as everyone who watched it would agree with me that it was indeed orgasmic, the backdrop slowly revealed a girl suspended mid-air falling slowly with water trickling down her body. the eerie sound of waters rushing filled the room then kablam! actual and real water started raining down on the stage! i mean come on!!

that was good.

i was so excited by it that this monstrosity (above) was the best shot i got of the girl-suspended-mid-air-in-a-curtain-of-water feature.

one just has to be there to feel it.

RAFW SS Day 1 Lee Mathews

hey how could would it be if we all had that chick's short platinum hair? very cool indeed. even on a brown-skinned asian like me. oh yeah. oh yeah, super cool.

well the colours on this collection were typical of lee mathews. that's not to say that it's mundane and regurgitated because the designs this season are quite fresh. they were organic, pale, light and playful but it's good to see some black in the range as well. licks of electric blues and oranges served as good contrasts and so were the metallics.

yes, metallics. again.

the looks were great, although it seems as if only an eccentric rock-petting horticulturist hippie could properly pull them off.

maybe i could convert to one.

As if anna thomas isn't the cutest thing. i mean look at her, she wakes you want to squeeze her then bite her head off! aaaaaaah! i can't have enough of her clothes, has anyone looked at them really closely? i mean really close? the seams, stitches, seam placement, cut, fabric----they're all pristine and perfectly placed.

the fresh faces of the girls that walked anna thomas was just absolutely deeeeeeelightful. i think vanessa milde's young face just keeps getting more beautiful as she grows. you thinks so too eh?

RAFW SS 2009 thoughts and rants.

for the past few days, the streets of sydney were lined with leggy, ponytailed, dewy skinned girls. white tents sprouted from the ground. a strange distinct scent came along as the winds blew the airy perfume of fashion week around the corner.

i was excited to once again, see the familiar faces in even more familiar clothes. the thought of those glammed up old ladies downing kegs of chardonnay and the anxious volunteers running around made me shiver me timbers.

so today was the first day of RAFW Spring Summer 2009. being a hunter of the cool young punter, i immediately tried to scramble my way through the labyrinth of a new layout to track down the interesting picture-promising folk.

backstage, the clothes were worn by fresh new faces. russian, i think the models were? or maybe not. maybe from brisbane? eh. russhbane. it was a lovely sight, but i wondered why the racks were absent of one kate peck. or everybody's favourite, tallulah tallulah. perhaps in the next few days they would grace the cameras in the bigger shows. well at least vanessa milde and annika were present to reassure.

looking at the pit, melbournian panama hat stand jessie french was nowhere to be seen. i was hoping i could meet her, or shoot her and steal her soul so as i may look good in one of those hats as well.
speaking of jessie frenches, our brisbane-sydneysider jessie french wasn't present either. while waiting to enter the michelle jank show, i only just caught tiah eckhardt-------fleeing the scene, escaping.

what is going on? is there some sort of movement i'm ot aware of? is there a revolt? a boycott? a coup d'etat?

well. anna thomas punched us again with her pristinely cut and tailored garments. the colours were ethereal.
trimapee was oh so super hip and cool. appropriately savage. deliciously rough.
michelle jank's show was just orgasmic. and the water feature? post orgasmic chill of course.

this week will no doubt keep me searching.
